A microphone, passive electric guitar, passive electric bass, etc., create signals that are very weak - this is because these signals are physically generated by the instrument or mic itself, not through electronic amplification. "The AudioBox USB and AudioBox 22VSL devices accept microphone or instrument level signals only. I bought the DI after reading this from their site: Thank you for the reply! This particular unit can't handle much, though, and PreSonus said it will damage the unit. You shouldn't need the DI, just plug the guitar straight in. A passive DI should work but you must use the XLR output. The output of a DI's XLR output is a mic level output, not a line level output. Just be aware that whatever you use is going to change the tone, for better or worse depending on what you get.ĭid no one in /r/audioengineering point this out? Seems like an easy one to me.ĮDIT: I may have misspoken a bit here. If you want one specifically for guitars, look at the SansAmp line. If you want to use a DI, you need an active DI which has a pre-amplifier which will boost your guitar signal to line levels. It will not boost the signal to line level, which is why you are getting a weak signal with distortion. Your guitar won't damage the input.Ī Passive DI will not work with active pickups (or passive pickups for that matter). Does anyone have *anything* I can try?īattery powered active pickups are still low-Z in terms of impedance. Nothing seems to solve this issue, and the equipment is brand-new. I am not running ANY effects of any kind. Have tried both with -30db pad and without. All ports on this computer are USB 2.0, so switching to a USB different port isn't applicable. Most of the time, I can't hear a thing unless I turn the INST knob ALL the way to the right-and once I do that, I have noise AND distortion. I am using the very lowest levels on ALL the Audiobox settings. Connection is 1/4 inch cable from guitar to the DI-600, then XLR to interface. My guitar has active pickups (battery-powered), and therefore needs to be run through a passive DI to avoid damaging the Audiobox. I recently bought a PreSonus Audiobox96 USB, and no matter what, I'm getting intermittent distortion when using my acoustic \ electric. I'm brand-new to audio stuff, and I'm REALLY hoping someone can help me- I have spent weeks reading about this, and my wits are at their absolute end.
